Redesigning Cities: Principles, Practice, Implementation

.

Jonathan Barnett, in his new book Redesigning Cities, shows how urban design can direct the time and money that goes into development toward a more positive result.  Barnett believes that too often, no one is happy with new development. Public officials feel trapped into choosing among unappealing alternatives, developers are frustrated, and the public is angry. Design can reshape suburban growth, revitalize older cities, and retrofit the places in our metropolitan regions where earlier development decisions went wrong. An advisor to key government agencies and to cities throughout the U.S. and abroad, Jonathan has influenced the way cities are designed. He was the director of urban design for the City of New York and advisor to Cleveland , Norfolk , Pittsburgh , Charleston , and Kansas City . Jonathan is also a professor of city and regional planning at the University of Pennsylvania and a board member of the Congress for the New Urbanism.
