Summary
of Results
The Florida Public Officials Design Institute at
Abacoa convened on May 13 and 14, 2004 with site
visits to the four project sites in the three communities
and a keynote address by Jonathan Barnett, author of
Redesigning Cities: Principles, Practice and Implementation.
This was followed by a day-long facilitated problem-solving
session during which ten
design experts addressed the diverse issues brought
to the Design Institute by the public officials. These
issues included Coral Gables ’ moratorium area
where intense development is encroaching onto single-family
neighborhoods and a second area with three prime city
owned parcels with out-dated parking structures. Other
issues included St. Lucie County's creation and expansion
of a Research and Education Park , specifically exploring
appropriate uses for surrounding properties, site layout
and integration with existing uses. The fourth issue
addressed South Bay's desire to improve its quality
of life through economic development, specifically by
developing city owned land into an industrial park.
